Electrolyte Resistance

Inside a lithium-ion battery is an electrolyte made by dissolving LiPF6 (lithium hexafluorophosphate) and other substances in an organic solvent.
It is known that when water reacts with this electrolyte, hydrofluoric acid is generated.
This hydrofluoric acid corrodes the leads and reduces adhesion to the seals, which can cause electrolyte leakage.
Futaba's tab leads have high electrolyte resistance and can maintain high sealing performance for a long period of time due to our original surface treatment of the lead material.

Sealing Perfomance

To prevent electrolyte inside the battery from leaking out, the tab leads must have sealing performance in addition to adhesion to the leads and packaging materials.
Our tab leads have few burrs, and by optimizing the adhesion method of the seal, there are no air gaps at the lead edge, resulting in high sealing performance.

Heat resistance of sealing material

The manufacturing process for laminated batteries involves thermo-compression bonding of the packaging material and tab leads.
The sealant that is made thinner by this thermo-compression process increases the risk of a short circuit between the packaging material and the tab leads.
Futaba's tab leads retain their thickness by using heat-resistant seals.
We also use a dual-type, three-layer (adhesive/heat-resistant/adhesive) sealant to ensure good adhesion to the packaging material.

In recent years, as the driving range of electric vehicles (EVs) has increased, rapid charging of batteries with high current density is needed.
This requires reducing the internal resistance of the battery, and the tab leads need to be thicker.
However, increasing the thickness of the leads raises concerns about reduced sealing performance at lead edge portion.
We have developed thicker tab leads that ensure sealing performance by giving the leads a tapered shape and optimizing the sealing method.
