Features of Futaba's Tab Leads
Inside a lithium-ion battery is an electrolyte made by dissolving LiPF6 (lithium hexafluorophosphate) and other substances in an organic solvent.
It is known that when water reacts with this electrolyte, hydrofluoric acid is generated.
This hydrofluoric acid corrodes the leads and reduces adhesion to the seals, which can cause electrolyte leakage.
Futaba's tab leads have high electrolyte resistance and can maintain high sealing performance for a long period of time due to our original surface treatment of the lead material.
To prevent electrolyte inside the battery from leaking out, the tab leads must have sealing performance in addition to adhesion to the leads and packaging materials.
Our tab leads have few burrs, and by optimizing the adhesion method of the seal, there are no air gaps at the lead edge, resulting in high sealing performance.
Heat resistance of sealing material
The manufacturing process for laminated batteries involves thermo-compression bonding of the packaging material and tab leads.
The sealant that is made thinner by this thermo-compression process increases the risk of a short circuit between the packaging material and the tab leads.
Futaba's tab leads retain their thickness by using heat-resistant seals.
We also use a dual-type, three-layer (adhesive/heat-resistant/adhesive) sealant to ensure good adhesion to the packaging material.
Desiccant Blended Sealant (Under Development)
It is known that when moisture enters the inside of a lithium-ion battery, hydrofluoric acid is generated, resulting in degradation of the battery's performance.
Futaba develop, manufacture, and sell desiccants for organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays, whose properties are also degraded by moisture.
We are using this technology to develop tab leads that capture minute amounts of moisture that enter through the sealing of the tab lead.

Supports Quick Charging
In recent years, as the cruising range of electric vehicles (EVs) has been extended, the need for rapid battery charging has increased.
Rapid charging requires low resistance of the battery itself, and the tab leads must be thicker, but thicker leads may reduce the sealant performance.
We are developing thick tab leads (1 to 3 mm) that can guarantee sealing performance by adding a tapered shape to the lead and by changing the bonding method of the seal.
